Gratitude For Wherever You Call Home This Holiday Season

When we started working from home, or working in full PPE, or being one of the only few workers in a space that used to bustle, most of us probably understood there was an indefinite timeline to these shifts. But many of us may not have considered that our travel and time with family and friends over the winter holidays would be part of the disruption of this pandemic. And now for so many, it is.

So this is a time we can hold dear our homes and our small circles. For the Love | Schack team, part of that will be spending time outside. From enjoying a neighborhood luminary drive to skiing to winter camping, we are lucky to have homes that come with access to the outdoors and places where we can feel embraced by our environments. While not the same as spending time with family, a snow-covered landscape is magical.

Inside, we have been reflecting on traditions we might start in the absence of the usual holiday plans and patterns. We are also feeling grateful to have healthy homes where we can ground ourselves amidst the challenges of this year. Whether it is changing the holiday menu, choosing to be present with opportunities and rituals that are available, or bringing home the biggest Christmas tree in the forest (thoughtfully selected with regard to forest health), intentional homes can be a great source of solace and comfort.

And we know not everyone will have good shelter this winter while unemployment is still high and evictions are happening as we hit the shortest days of the year. Our winter solstice wish is to be able to continue doing the work of creating natural, efficient, healthy, and attainable shelter in our communities. May you all be well as we enter the New Year.
